The Misconception Surrounding World Of Warcraft

There is a common misconception surrounding the massively multiplayer online role playing game World of Warcraft, designed by Blizzard Entertainment. A lot of people incorrectly assume that individuals who play the game are "geeky" or "nerdy" or that they are addict or obsessed with the game.

One of the largest factors affecting the general public's views on World Of Warcraft, and any MMORPG for that matter, is the image that has been built up of players in the media. The media will report on any cases which stand out, the extremities of the player base. For example the situation where a 50 year old gamer, playing World Of Warcraft, died due to heart failure brought on from dehydration and starvation. It is cases like this that gives online games, such as World Of Warcraft, their bad reputation.

It is easy enough for a member of the general public to take such a view point. All they have been exposed to regarding the game is what the media has reported regarding that particular game. This has produced a skewed and incorrect view of these games and the people that play them.

The majority of the player base involved in WoW are everyday working class people, only a small proportion of players are extremists and play the game nonstop for extended periods. The age range of people playing the game speaks for itself, children as young as 8-10 years old play the game and as old as 80
