A lot of people think you need to get a wave of units to provide an effective 6 pool rush counter, but the reality is, zerglings are the weakest unit in the game, albeit they are capable of inflicting a decent amount of damage once they are in your mineral line. What's the solution to this? Put the workers to work taking out the zergling rush!
Seriously, it's that simple. 90 percent of the time, one or two standarc units plus a barrage of workers will provide a more than effective 6 pool rush counter when zerglings are invading your base. This is one of the reasons why I appreciate StarCraft 2 a lot. In the original StarCraft, a 6 pool rush was practically unbeatable by the workers alone since workers back then were clumsy and could only be ordered to attack if attacking a specific unit.
Now, workers in StarCraft 2 deal a bit more damage and can be ordered into assault mode quickly. This means you need a good micro game in order to overcome the workers turning on the zerglings since a worker is now almost as strong as a zergling in combat! This makes a 6 pool rush highly ineffective by itself. However, if playing in 2's, you can double rush an opponent with this method and they will struggle to find a 6 pool rush counter when there are two happening to them at once!
Overall, the 6 pool rush strategy is a great one, but not one that is incapable of being countered. You need to know what race your opponent is playing and keep an eye out for the rush. Assume a rush is coming and prepare for it, or take the initiative and take it yourself. The bottom line is, the risk is high and the longer you spend not knowing what your opponent is doing the greater the risk of him doing something you don't expect. If your opponent rushes, use a 6 pool rush counter and then go in with a rush of your own!
