For sheer simplicity and the potential for a quick kill, the Zergling rush is a powerful strategy. The variation I'm about to describe here is more useful than the wimpy rushes you may have heard of before.
It works when you realize that strategy is about using your strengths against your opponents weaknesses.
Remember David and Goliath. Goliath was a huge strong, drugged up psycho. David was small and physically weaker. His chances of arm wrestling Goliath were zero. That's why he used a sling shot. Stayed out of Golaiths reach and used speed and superior weaponry to kill him. (Who knew bible stories would help win online 3D video games!)
Which means you can use this against another Zerg or Protoss opponent, but against a Terran opponent, forget it. Terran gamers can easily build a wall around their base, stopping your zerglings in their tracks.
The basis of this strategy is to use your starting drones to harvest minerals. The real key is to start with 6 drones. Keep it at that and save up 200 minerals. Then you build a spawning pool. While it's building you build two more drones. This time save 150 minerals and as soon as you finish your spawning pool get 6 zerglings.
Right after that make one gas with a drone, then build another zergling. Then you make another gas and build 2 more zerglings. At this point you can cancel both gases and instead of going in to attack your opponent with just 6 Zerglings, this way you have 10. Bigger numbers means a more powerful and effective strategy.
Another variation is to produce a Queen from your spawning pool. Build the spawning pool at 9 of 10 supplies. This is critical! The Queen allows you to easily produce more Zerglings with its Spawn larva ability. This way you can send in two waves of Zerglings. As soon as the Larva hatch make another 12 Zerglings a piece. And if you can boost the speed with a speed upgrade for the Zerglings even better. Speed is your strength in this strategy. Speed not only stuns, it can cripple and kill.
Just remember only use this against other Zerg or protoss opponents. Not against Terran!
