If you did not play the original Starcraft, because you were too young, or your parents did not let you play it for whatever reason, or you just were not interested at that time, then you are honestly starting from behind. If your mind is rigged to RTS games, from past experience, you will have some understanding of how these types of games work; however, nothing else is like Starcraft 2.
Do not fret! Just because you never played the first game, or the beta, or you did and you still suck, that does not mean that you cannot improve significantly and quickly. Great news, right? As with any type of learning the key is to be critical, using your meta-cognitive skills, as your high school teacher might have said.
I have 3 tips for you to begin to dramatically and immediately improve in Starcraft 2:
1. Firstly, it is a good idea to go through the campaign, on brutal. Yeah, yeah, you beat the campaign on normal or even hard already, but this is not patty-cake, alright Dorothy. In normal you could probably beat the campaign with SCVs and drones. It takes more time to beat the game on brutal, but it is also more rewarding. Think about it. There were a number of times when I had to completely revise my strategies and counteract very powerful units with comparatively weak ones. This training combined with the challenge mode in single player will help give you a basic understanding of what units do, how they work against other units and how much strategy and speed you ultimately have to play with. The brutal campaign FORCES you to get the basics of multitasking as well.
2. Use the practice league and human opponents to practice your skills. Hey, I know the feeling of not wanting to get my butt kicked, but you win some matches and you lose some. Overcome that fear and anxiety of losing. Whether you have played this game for a week or two months, human opponents will always be more interesting and often more challenging than the AI. With humans you are forced to expect and adapt to strategies you may not have expected. Work against that fear of failure. Sure you may not be the best at everything, let alone this game, but it is alright to fail or lose. Especially if you are improving as a result of those failures.
3. Finally, spend some time watching the pros play. Go watch some league matches on YouTube. The best players study their opponents, looking not just for weaknesses but for things that can be learned and improved upon in themselves. This is a secret not only in Starcraft 2 but in many disciplines. If someone has a better strategy than you, mimic it, take from it what you can, and adapt it to your style or make it better.
Those are only a few of the ways that you can improve your Starcraft 2 strats and skills.
Work hard to improve your skills; that does not mean that you have to play all day long. Improvement is something that we do poorly or we do well. Use your time well, and it will pay off.
