Starcraft 2 Hints For Beginners - Economy Basics

Starcraft 2 is an exciting real time strategy game (RTS) that was recently released after years of development. If you're new to RTS games or Starcraft, then things might be a bit confusing at first, so here's a few Starcraft 2 hints for beginners.

One of the keys to winning in Starcraft 2 is managing your economy. This is the "macro" or "macro-management" portion of the game. You can't build up your base and create more units unless you have the funds to do so. So don't be afraid to create more workers to harvest those resources!

For optimum efficiency, you should have 2 workers on each mineral field, and 3 workers on each vespene geyser. You can have more than that, but they really don't add much because there's a limit on how many workers can harvest each resource deposit at one time, so the extra workers will just end up waiting in line. The numbers stated above take into account this limit, as well as travel time from the resource to your collection point. However, if anything, it's probably better to have more workers than less because you can always use them for other tasks down the line. So don't worry too much about the exact number as long as you have the minimum amount.

Don't forget, supply is a resource too! But it's a resource you create yourself by building certain structures, or in the case of the Zerg, creating an Overlord unit. Supply is basically the "food" of your army, so you can't build new units unless you have enough supply to do so. Make sure you have enough supply so you can quickly expand your army without waiting around too long.

Spend those resources! If you have a large surplus of resources, you're not expanding as quickly or efficiently as you could, so be sure to use them up. Of course, be sure to spend wisely as well. If you're not sure what to spend on, I'd say either more workers, fighting units, unit producing buildings, or supply buildings/units. These are things that always come in handy. If you have tech research buildings you can always try upgrading your units as well.

Don't be afraid to expand your base. In most maps, there are "natural expansions" or areas with more resource deposits nearby. Use these to your advantage and build a secondary base to double your production levels. This is also a great way to spend excess unused minerals.

Yes, If you have a solid understanding of the economy/macro aspect of the game, then you'll be well on your way to mastering Starcraft 2.
