Mass Effect 2 on PS3 uses Mass Effect 3 engine

PlayStation 3 owners may not be getting the short end of the Mass Effect laser-stick after all. Mass Effect 2 producer Jesse Houston has revealed that the sci-fi action RPG is going to look better on the PS3  than its Xbox counterparts because it is running on the next game’s engine.

Houston explains that the development team had created the engine for Mass Effect 3 and used that to make the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2. In order to accomplish that feat the team “ took the content, the story and all of the other assets that made up Mass Effect 2 and we put it into the Mass Effect 3 engine.”

The PS3 version is more than just good looks though, Houston goes on to say that several other tweaks and improvements have been made as well. For example, with the system’s Blu-ray technology, disc swapping is a thing of the past and the game’s controls have been “geared towards the PS3 controller.” They have also included all patches and bug fixes that have been released to the Xbox version and have improved planet scanning.

Improved planet scanning? Those playing the first time on PS3 have no idea how lucky they are. No idea at all.
